Whether it’s on original tracks like “Holdin’ On” or remixes of songs like Picture Book’s “Sunshine,” Justin Faust has always seemed to make vocal hooks shine as bright as possible by surrounding them with shimmering instrumental work. So it’s interesting that on his remix of Janet Jackson‘s “Someone to Call My Lover,” Faust pitches Janet’s vocals down, replacing some of their playful luster with smooth seductiveness. That said, Jackson’s lyrics and cadence are memorable enough that the listener is still instantly transported back to her 2001 hit despite her new pitch. “Someone to Call My Lover” has always been a sensational pop song, but it’s simply too bubbly for an abundance of club play in 2014; Justin Faust imbues it was all of the sexiness necessary to make it a late night staple once again.
