Coachella and Lollapalooza have officially banned selfie sticks
The popularity of selfie sticks — the latest vanity craze to sweep the US — has led two prominent North American festivals to ban the item. As Brooklyn Vegan points out, both Coachella and Lollapalooza have taken a definitive stance against the camera accessory, listing it under their prohibited items section. While Lollapalooza’s ban lists “GoPro attachments like sticks, selfie sticks & monopods,” Coachella’s policy takes a more direct approach, prohibiting “Selfie sticks / Narcissists.”
It’s easy to see why they’ve done so — the selfie stick not only serves as an obstruction to other people’s view, but also encourages bootleg recordings of sets. While festivals like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, and Sasquatch have yet to take a stance on the device, venues in the UK like London’s O2 Arena and Wembley Arena have already banned the item for health and safety reasons.
If you’re heading to Coachella in two weeks, do yourself a favor and leave the selfie stick at home.
