Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin honored through vintage DJ trading cards

The vastness of the internet can occasionally turn up gems, especially when those seeking hidden treasures are tech-savvy with a soft spot for 90s nostalgia. All these conditions came together serendipitously earlier this year, when Pulse Radio uncovered a series of fourteen DJ “trading cards” that were released in 1996 as an accompaniment to Mr. C’s mix CD, X-Mix: The Electronic Storm. Mr. C, along with other legends of dance music like Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, and Paul van Dyk, are among the subjects of the original cards. The series include fun facts about the artists such as their longest-ever set, number of 12” releases, and BPM preference (which stays close to 130, across the board).

The cards were originally released on the German imprint !K7 and now, two decades after the original release of the cards, a modern edition has been released. Spend about $31 (£20) at the !K7 online store, and you’ll be rewarded with a pack of immortalized superstars of 2015. The new elite include Nina Kraviz, Carl Craig, Four Tet, Maya Jane Coles, John Talabot, and DJ Koze, among others. Updated tidbits reflect the more immediate nature of electronic music and artist-fan relations, such as the number of bookings in the past year, number of remixes, and social media fan counts.

The new cards were released to coincide with the release of 50th DJ-Kicks, out last month under DJ Koze. Grab your set of the limited sets of cards here.
