DA Premiere: GTA – What We Tell Dem (Falcons Remix)
From the moment GTA emerged on the scene, their eloquently simple mantra has been crystal clear: “Death to Genres.” Without ever faltering on their cardinal rule, the pair have yet to allow themselves to be typecast by any one sound. From Miami-made moombahton to heavy-handed trap beats, Van Toth and JWLS have established themselves as top-tier producers without a distinct sound of their own. And they plan on keeping it that way.
Early 2015 brought the duo’s Death to Genres Vol. 1 EP, indicating that more volumes would soon follow, but before the pair’s next installment, GTA has enlisted a stacked cast of remixers for Death to Genres Vol. 1.5. Leading the pack is Falcons, kicking off the new compilation with his take on “What We Tell Dem.”
GTA’s original mix crosses smooth dancehall elements with Wiwek‘s turbulent jungle terror style for a wonky house-tempo cut that Falcons picks apart piece by piece. Keeping only vital remnants of the original, Falcons carries the tune’s lyrical spits with his own cooling, futuristic trap music. Dubby verses strewn out in Jamaican patois tip toe around sharp hi-hat rolls as Falcons modifies “What We Tell Dem” to fit his own innovative style.
Death to Genres Vol. 1.5 is now available for pre-order, and with each order, grab Falcon’s latest cut free of charge. The remix package is set to officially land on August 4th, also featuring contributions by Kill The Noise, Bart Claessen, and Crookers. With an increasing number of producers out there beginning to step away from genre norms, “Death to Genres” sounds less like a motto and more like a movement.
