Listen to Radiohead’s unreleased James Bond theme for ‘Spectre’

Back in 2012, Adele delivered what many would consider the perfect James Bond theme with “Skyfall.” To soundtrack the opening to the newest film in the series, Spectre, the franchise recruited Sam Smith, who came up with “Writing’s on the Wall.”

Around the same time Smith was asked, Radiohead also received a call to compose a theme for the movie. Though Smith’s song was eventually chosen, Radiohead’s version has now been released to the public via SoundCloud.

The haunting tune immediately recalls the band’s 2001 single, “Pyramid Song.” Thom Yorke’s delicate falsetto is on full display, backed by gorgeous piano chords and cinematic strings. Altogether, the elements coalesce into an awe-inspiring composition, perfectly equipped for the bravado and allure of a James Bond blockbuster. At the end of the day, with a theme as powerful as this, it’s a bit of a mystery how Radiohead’s version wasn’t chosen.

“Last year we were asked to write a theme tune for the Bond movie Spectre.
Yes we were. It didn’t work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much.
As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it.
Merry Christmas. May the force be with you.”
