Flying Lotus shares decade-old tribute to J Dilla on the anniversary of his passing

Ten years ago this week, legendary Detroit MC, J Dilla, passed away unexpectedly. The sudden loss sent a ripple of mourning beyond the hip-hop community, and now, even a decade later, the fallen rapper’s influence and untimely passing are still evident across the modern music space. Dilla, the son of a jazz musician and an opera singer, wore his musical roots on his sleeve throughout his storied career and his work has since embedded itself in the roots of some of today’s leading creatives.

Among them is Flying Lotus, who, ten years ago this week, was spinning a new special live mix for Dublab on the day of Jay Dee’s passing. Dilla’s newly minted Donuts dropped the same week so it was fitting that FlyLo dedicated the session to the memory of the former Slum Village proponent. The mix includes choice hip-hop selections and rare instrumental clips that J Dilla and Madlib had even sampled themselves. The mix even includes a couple originals from Dilla himself, and has since been come to be known as “Dilla’s Still Here.”

To mark ten years since J Dilla passed away, Dublab is offering “Dilla’s Still Here (02.10.06)” for free here.
