This weekend marks Tomorrowland’s twelfth annual festival in Boom, Belgium. Slightly north of Brussels, the festival has become an archetype that many festivals since have attempted to emulate, or even replicate. Tomorrowland’s influence is so vast that a number of internationally-renowned DJs have attributed their success to being booked in the festival’s early days.
Tomorrowland has grown substantially in its twelve-year tenure. Having expanded to hold satellite events in the United States and Brazil, each installation of the festival expounds upon the prior year’s otherworldly stage productions and expansive lineups. However, the inaugural festival was itself an impressive event by modern standards, boasting lineup appearances by the likes of Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Ferry Corsten, and many more — the stage production, too, was remarkable for the festival standards of 2005.
