Carl Cox celebrates his last summer at Space Ibiza in bittersweet Essential Mix

“When you think of Ibiza, you think of Carl Cox and you think of Space.” So begins a very special edition of BBC Radio1’s Essential Mix series featuring a live performance from the legend at the iconic club he’s called his Ibiza home for over a decade.

Cox’s summer residency this year is a bittersweet one, celebrating both the 15th anniversary of his first turn behind the club’s decks and the end of an era. In a highly publicized series of events, Space Ibiza will be taken over by its more commercial rival–the resort-club Ushuaïa.

Widely considered the face of the Balearic old guard, Cox has candidly disparaged the shift. Though he will likely make guest appearances in future seasons, Cox has made it known that this season is the end of an important era on the island.

“You know for me, it’s been just absolutely amazing,” says Cox of his 15 year run at Space Ibiza. “We are just finishing it up in fine style.”

This week’s Essential Mix begins with a laudatory intro from friend and host Pete Tong and a short interview with Cox, before launching into a high-powered mix of classic house and tech house crowd pleasers. Offerings from Nora En Pure and Chimera drive the energetic set as clubgoers cheer Cox along. One of the more memorable Essential Mixes in recent memory, it’s a euphoric send off for the island institution.
