Vertex Festival 2017 has been cancelled

Event producer Madison House introduced Vertex, a four-day camping festival, last year to its home state of Colorado. Designed to be a more relaxed, inclusive take on Madison House’s widely popular Electric Forest festival, Vertex’s debut featured a slew of big-name electronic acts, including Odesza, Duke Dumont, Jai Wolf, and RÜFÜS DU SOL, and was co-produced by AEG Live, the event organizer behind festivals like Coachella and Panorama.

Unfortunately, Madison House has decided not to move forward with Vertex’s 2017 event. According to the Denver Post, mounting frustrations between festival organizers, the commissioners of Buena Vista’s Chafee County, and residents of the county caused huge hurdles for the festival. During a series of hearings, dozens of individuals came forward and complained about their homes being disturbed by the festival’s bass, strangers wandering in their neighborhoods, and the total of four drug arrests which transpired last year. On the other hand, residents in favor of the project cited the massive boost in consumer spending which resulted from last year’s event.

While discussions have been productive according to a statement, the ongoing public meetings have pushed Madison House far beyond their planning deadlines.

The statement reads: “The recent approval of the permit for Vertex in 2017 is much appreciated, and displays the collective intentions to discover a great path forward. Buena Vista’s relationship with a world-class festival has amazing potential. Rushing forward could compromise the quality of the festival and is not in the best interest of Buena Vista or Vertex. We look forward to ongoing productive discussions with the community so that we can best plan the dream of what Vertex can become.”

Although Madison House ultimately received the required permit for Vertex 2017, the approval came with serious stipulations, including noise constraints and an earlier curfew. Commissioners also rejected Madison House’s request for a three-year permit, which festival director Michael Sampliner explained is essential for substantial and necessary investment into the event.

There is some good news for fans of Vertex. Although 2017 is a no-go for the festival, the door is still open for a 2018 revival. Madison House plans to re-apply for a three-year permit again next year.
