Westworld, HBO’s latest blockbuster drama, recently wrapped up its first season. There’s a lot to love in the Science Fiction/Western hybrid aside from its thrilling battle scenes and numerous shocking twists. Among the series’ many subtle strengths is its compelling musical score, arranged by Game of Thrones‘ composer Ramin Djawadi, whose presence in Westworld is immediately apparent in the sonic similarities between the two shows’ opening themes.

While Djawadi contributes a number of original compositions to the Westworld score, one of its most satisfying facets is the extensive array of covers he integrates into the score. Djawadi transforms a diverse catalogue of classic songs from the past several decades into minimal piano covers and crescendoing symphonic arrangements — something which viewers likely first noticed when Djawadi accompanied the series’ first major battle scene with an epic orchestral version of The Rolling Stones‘ seminal classic, “Paint It, Black.”

The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” are among some of Djawadi’s most notable covers within the show, as are his revisions of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Something I can Never Have” and Amy Winehouse‘s “Back to Black.” However, the act which seems to have inspired the composer most significantly in his scoring for the program is Radiohead. Djawadi’s score includes three covers from the band throughout the series’ course: “Motion Picture Soundtrack,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Exit Music (For a Film)”, from the albums Kid AThe Bends, and OK Computer, respectively.

Though fans may have to wait until 2018 for the second season of Westworld (no official release date has been provided as of yet), Djawadi’s masterfully-scored soundtrack for the first season is available below to stream in full.
