Listen to deadmau5’s first BBC Radio 1 residency mix

Early in December, BBC Radio 1 announced their list of 2017 residents, revealing a list of esteemed DJs including the likes of Kölsch and Eats Everything. The largest name on the rotating series’ roster, of course, was deadmau5, who celebrated his birthday by providing his debut residency mix yesterday, January 5.A deadmau5 mix for dance music’s most respected radio station is exactly what the artist’s dedicated fans would expect from him – and in this case, predictability is a wonderful thing.

Throughout the broadcast’s two hours, Joel Zimmerman evades selecting songs from his own catalogue for the most part; he opens with “Imaginary Friends” and mixes in Com Truise’s remix of his own “Strobe” down the line, but dedicates the rest of the mix to an eclectic melange of tasteful music. Weaving an engaging, energetically dynamic set, deadmau5 explores the quaking techno of Maceo Plex and ANNA, the cerebral ambiences of Max Cooper and Jon Hopkins, and the ethereal soundscapes of Tycho and one of his strongest inspirations, Boards of Canada. Given the musical variety of his inaugural mix, it’s exciting to see where deadmau5 will take his series in the coming months.
