Nickelodeon adds EDM category to 2017 Kid’s Choice Awards

EDM has not only taken the festival-loving, 20-something masses by storm, but apparently children as well. As the music rises further into the mainstream, a considerable segment of minors have gravitated toward this neo-pop sound containing singles like Martin Garrix’s “Animals,” whose attention-grabbing melodic arrangements oftentimes are faintly reminiscent of songs they might have heard in their very earliest years.

Nickelodeon producers have keenly observed this growing trend, and aptly applied it to this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards. Of the nine categories listed, a new one titled “Favorite EDM Artist/DJ” has arisen with unsurprising nominees including the aforementioned Garrix along with Major Lazer, Zedd, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, and DJ Snake. Kids of the modern area apparently join their older counterparts in pondering the much-asked question, “turn down for what?”

Naturally, The Chainsmokers were also nominated for awards under the “Favorite New Artist” category and “Favorite Music Group” categories. The only name missing that would truly complete this list is Marshmello, who we admit are shocked to have not been included in such a dynamic group of talent. Perhaps he’ll make it big enough for next year’s addition.

Who do you think will be voted as the first EDM DJ to be honored with a public sliming this year? Find out on March 11.

H/T: Thump
