Hot Chip take on Katy Perry’s ‘Chained To The Rhythm’
Hot Chip have added their signature funk-laced touch to Katy Perry’s politically-charged, “Chained To The Rhythm,” exploring retro soundscapes with videogame-esque synth accents and chopping up the singer’s vocals to later remold them into their vision for the song. A pronounced bass-line tops off the finished product by adding a sense of gravity to an otherwise light offering – similar to the effect Katy Perry and Skip Marley’s lyrics have on the original’s disco flavored synthpop.
“Chained To The Rhythm” was released earlier in the year as what Perry calls, “purposeful pop” and explores themes of complacency in a turbulent world. Hot Chip’s remixof the track serves a less political but no less vital purpose as the band’s first composition together since their album Why Make Sense? in 2015.
