Posthumous J Dilla mixtape curated by his mother set to be officially released

We just recently passed the 11th anniversary of J Dilla‘s passing. The untimely loss of the Slum Village producer and rapper dealt a heavy blow to the hip-hop community, though even more than a decade later, the iconized emcee is still giving gifts to fans. Well, more accurately, his mother is. Dilla’s mom, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, has curated a new collection of unreleased, previously unheard beats from her son’s oeuvre, rounding 19 tracks together into an aptly-titled new mixtape, Motor City.

The newly discovered instrumentals are scheduled to land on April 21, compiled by Ma Dukes as both a letter to her son and an homage to their native city of Detroit. The physical copies of the limited-edition posthumous release will be packaged in an envelope that carries a handwritten note from Yancey to Jay Dee inside as well. Ahead of Motor City‘s official release, Beat Junkies figurehead J Rocc has mixed the 19 new cuts into “Motor City Blend #1” which will be available to download with the album next month.
