Three weeks ahead of the release of Humanz, the fifth studio album by the elusive virtual band Gorillaz, four noteworthy artists have releases respective remixes of the four tracks debuted thus far. These remixes span the genre spectrum, from undefinable electronic soundscapes to four-to-the-floor house.
Perhaps the most noteworthy of the four, Bonobo amplifies the ethereal atmosphere of “Andromeda” in a delicately precise rendition, and marks Bonobo’s first release since his stunning sixth studio album Migration. Banx & Ranx flip “Saturnz Barz” into a bass-heavy dub rendition of Albarn’s group’s new Popcaan collaboration and hit the nail on the head. The dub influence here fits well with Popcaan’s vocals.
In a funky house remix, Claptone turns “We Got the Power” into an exciting new version of Gorillaz collaboration with Jehnny Beth. This rendition recalls Claptone’s hit “Heartbeat” and carries the same noteworthiness. Combining erratic breaks and tech-house elements, Nic Fanciulli rounds out the selections with an energetic club-ready remix of “Ascension.”
