Dutch icon Armin van Buuren helped pave the way for trance’s popularity throughout his career, accruing an even larger fan base upon his entrance into the pop scene where the world saw the true breadth of his musicality.
For years, van Buuren has used his Armin Only shows as a treat to fans, embarking on international tours to provide immersive, extended sets which showcase his lengthy repertoire in addition to other groundbreaking hits by his colleagues. Oftentimes, he brings on various vocalists and other collaborators to create a truly “live” experience. 2017 marked a special occasion: The Best of Armin Only. With the former “king of trance” having burst onto the scene 20 years ago with his single “Blue Fear,” it only seemed fitting for him to organize his biggest show to date.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, with both shows on May 12-13 completely selling out and filling the entirety of the Amsterdam ArenA. 80,000 fans in total attended the momentous affair, while an additional 4.8 million streamed the event through various online platforms. It’s safe to say he “went all out,” employing a vast amount of acrobats, accompanying bands, and dancers in addition to multiple collaborators he’s worked with over the duration of his career.
The artist also released an eponymous album which captures the essence of the past shows and also includes brand new music. The album also comes as a special edition box set to particularly ardent fans.
“I’m still shaking from all this. This show, this crowd… It was absolutely phenomenal. I’m a bit bummed out that it has gone by so quickly, but I enjoyed this so, so much. I’d like to thank everyone for their support and all of their hard work, my fans of course and also Alda, 250K, DLP, Armada and Corrino Media Group. ‘The Best Of Armin Only’ isn’t just my ultimate highlight. It’s ours!”
