DJ Shadow releases surprise EP featuring Danny Brown, Nas and Steven Price

In 2016, veteran producer Josh Davis released his most recent studio album as DJ Shadow, The Mountain Will Fall, on Nas’ Mass Apeal Records. The album, which Davis reportedly viewed as a risk after eschewing more “comfortable” deals on major labels, was quite a critical success, with songs such as his Run The Jewels collaboration, “Nobody Speak,” becoming regarded among the year’s best releases.

Today, July 6, DJ Shadow has followed up his aforementioned album with a new EP, The Mountain Has Fallen. Releasing the player as a surprise, the artist relates its conception back to his success despite the challenges which faced the 2016 LP:

“I guess you could say that this new EP is my version of a victory lap. It’s a celebration, and an extension of those confident steps forward.”

The four-track record features Davis’ Nas collaboration, “Systematic,” which was released earlier this year as part of the soundtrack for HBO’s Silicon Valley. DJ Shadow also enlists Danny Brown for the viscerally inciting “Horror Show,” which was released earlier today. Furthermore, Steven Price, who won the Academy Award for Best Score in 2013 for his work in Gravity, joins as a collaborator on the epic, yet challenging “Corridors.” The EP also includes a cerebral, rhythmically erratic solo effort, “Good News.”

The Mountain Has Fallen is available in full via Mass Appeal.
