THIRTY hospitalized for overdose at VELD Music Festival
Toronto’s VELD Music Festival wrapped up its sixth edition on August 5th and 6th, serving attendees a tasteful mix of hip hop and dance music, with Zedd, Major Lazer, Migos, and Future representing but four of the festival’s six headliners. Unfortunately more than a few attendees were hospitalized during the festival reportedly for overdose-related health complications.
Paramedics have since reported that thirty people were hospitalized last weekend due to drug overdoses. Officials noted that those transported were “taken in minor to serious, but not life-threatening condition.”
Toronto police have issued several health warnings prior to the festival about drugs potentially laced with an opioid pain medication, fentanyl. A highly potent substance, fentanyl was tied to the deaths of six people, and the hospitalizations of twenty more in Toronto last month. Those deaths were ruled as suspected overdoses from laced drug use.
Despite the surge in fatal overdoses in the area, Paramedic Services Supt. Kim McKinnon conveyed that the number was comparable to that of other similarly sized festivals.
