Good Morning Mix: Turn on the lights with Hammer’s Lights On Mix

BBC Radio 1‘s Monki is the underground tastemaker to trust.

Between a healthy upbringing on Ibiza tunes from her mother, a gifting of hip-hop and garage tapes throughout her childhood from her uncle, and a hefty serving of dub and grime from her London hometown, it’s safe to say she knows her way behind the decks.

Monki serves as a resident on Annie Mac’s touring club night “AMP” and set up her digital label Zoo Music in 2012. In turn, one can be sure Monki’s late night BBC show never disappoints.

Her “Lights On Mix,” airing every Sunday night through Monday morning, is a soundtrack for the moment the club is closing, but no one wants to go home. In essence, Monki presents the afterparty playlist and often welcomes artists to cultivate a culmination of classic and new downtempo numbers that hold their own after a long night on the dancefloor.

Perfectly encapsulating the essence of Monki’s “Lights On Mix” is Belfast and Glasgow-based Hammer. Named one of Monki’s  “Ones To Watch,” Hammer, real name Rory Hamilton, brings this home in his near 30-minute mix. Hammer helps listeners get ready to turn on the bright lights, encapsulating the aura of a 4 am warehouse winding down.
