Dutch duo DROELOE pull up to New Music Friday to drop off “Backbone,” a single that serves as a continuation of the duo’s production of “percussion-heavy future bass” at which DROELOE have proven adroit. A single that gains its flippancy from its lyrical content, “Backbone” features Nevve — memorable for her work on Elephante’s “Catching On,” and Illenium’s “Fractures” — as its vocalist. Nevve’s vocal is a smooth layer that DROELOE places atop whimsical, clanging synths. The song’s synth work is a playful product of the pressure that DROELOE applies to “Backbone’s” percussively focused build, an ascent that gains momentum as the track progresses, the single fluid as it speeds towards the three-minute mark.
