Premiere: Wax Motif ft Kaelyn Behr – Unraveling

Danny Chien doesn’t believe in hype. The Australian-born beat maker better known as Wax Motif isn’t content on only producing the same sound,  rather Chien is constantly proving that he’s ready for more challenging work.

Having previously released titles on Tchami’s Confession label and Diplo‘s Mad Decent, Wax Motif brings an identifiably unique style to the studio, fusing his many musical influences — from R&B, disco and UK bass — into varying genres of house.

One month after the release of his Forsaken EP, Wax Motif returns with a warm and moody track titled “Unraveling,” via Spinnin’ Deep.

The record features the airy vocals of fellow Aussie songwriter Kaelyn Behr, who has worked alongside GTA and Tommy Trash. With all the makings of a delicate deep house ballad, “Unraveling” is a fully collaborative effort that works on multiple layers, combining delicate drum work and deep bass lines with masterful lyrics. For his part, the producer says the collaboration arrived just at the right time.

“Kaelyn and I been writing music together for over 10 years,” Chien told Dancing Astronaut of the release. “We’ve probably worked on 100 songs together in some way or another…. This came at the right time in my life where I was transitioning out of a relationship.”

“My music is always gonna be in the house realm,” he continues, “but I really wanted a song that could be listened to outside the clubs too — some island party slow drive beach kinda shit. This just has the vibes.”

The most impressive quality of the track shines in Wax Motif’s ability to craft a sound design that captures all the energy of a high-tempo deep house anthem, but at a lower tempo that highlights a fresh and more subdued direction for the producer.
