DIplo talks forthcoming ‘California’ EP & hijacking ‘EDM’

Annie Mac‘s BBC Radio 1 show recently hosted Diplo to discuss his upcoming EP, California. With a release scheduled for some time next month, the EP will feature more live instrumentation than computer generated noises and will feature rappers like Lil Yachty. Diplo goes on to explain that the title for the project is simply based on a collection of tracks he worked on last year in his current home base in the Hollywood Hills.

When asked about how he’s phasing out of EDM and turning to pop/hip-hop for his upcoming EP, the dance music superstar shared his perspective on the controversial term:

“Me and Calvin [Harris] hijacked the term EDM when it was good for us. We might be in magazine articles [being called] the EDM guys, but we were never that,” says Diplo. “I’ve known [Calvin] for so many years and he was doing funk music, singing on records… We hijacked [the term EDM] at the moment and he refined it. He did it better than anyone else.”

Annie also asked about his silly TV appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, where he danced alongside and Goldlink. Diplo laughed it off, saying,  “As a artist or producer, I’m working on borrowed time anyways. What does a DJ do on stage? Nothing. So I’ll try anything.”
