Dancing Astronaut’s Top Tracks of June 2017

Every month, Dancing Astronaut compiles the top songs from the past 30 days into a single Spotify playlist. Vetted and considered by our cross-continental editorial staff, these are the best singles, remixes, and original tracks to have surfaced in the past month.

In a festival-laden flash, June has come and gone. The first official month of summer saw impressive output from various points across the electronic music spectrum. Calvin Harris finally released his star-studded fifth album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1,  while Maceo Plex ventured in an emotive, experimental direction for his sophomore album, Solar. Meanwhile, Mura Masa continued to increase anticipation for his imminent debut album by sharing further tracks from the project, including “Blu,” his thoughtful collaboration with Damon Albarn.

Bassnectar, Bonobo, and Krewella all engendered fervor among their followings last month with new EPs. Furthermore, a compelling of hitmakers and trendsetters teamed up to provide high profile collaborative singles, including David Guetta and Justin Bieber, Lido and THEY., and Area21 (the duo of Martin Garrix and Maejor). Perhaps most notably, Daft Punk lent their production and writing talents to rising Australian band Parcels for their funk-driven single, “Overnight.”

From both the mainstream and “underground” sectors of dance music, numerous tastemakers provided successful remixes. NGHTMRE and Rickyxsan put forth a significant spin on Galantis in the duo’s Hunter” remix package, while Solomun offered two very compelling interpretations of Pantha du Prince’s “Dream Yourself Awake.” Rising German duo Adana Twins created one of June’s best club tracks in their transformative remix of Fritz Kalkbrenner’s “Changing Face.”
