MDMA to enter trial as alcoholism treatment

A trial to determine the efficacy of MDMA in the treatment of alcoholism is set to begin in the UK in the next two months. Led by scientists of the Imperial College London, the study will feature 20 subjects, consisting of heavy drinkers and relapsed alcoholics, given heavy doses of 99.9% pure MDMA over an all-day therapy session.

In addition to their work with therapists, the subjects are also required to go through a two-day detox period and, once administered the drug, spend time meditating.

Ben Sessa, a clinical psychiatrist participating in the study, was quick to point out that the focus of the trial was not MDMA itself, but rather, to develop the doctor-patient relationship and develop new avenues to treat those who have experienced trauma.

We know that MDMA works really well in helping people who have suffered trauma and it helps to build empathy. Many of my patients who are alcoholics have suffered some sort of trauma in their past and this plays a role in their addiction.
