DA Exclusive Interview: Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman

Today we feature an interview with a duo we have picked out as one of our top 5 emerging rookies of 2012. Dimitri Vangelis and Wyman are two young and very promising producers hailing from Sweden. They received a lot of attention for their remix of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” but have also put out a ton of other great productions including their remix of Tove Styrke’s “Call My Name” and their new single “Roll the Dice.” Click after the break to read our exclusive interview and find out why we have picked these guys for major success in 2012!

DA: How long have you been producing/DJing?

Depends on how you look at it, but lets say 5 years.

DA: What sparked your interest in electronic music?

Well, between us we basically like all kinds of music, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s 90’s and genres like ROCK, BLUES, RNB, HIPHOP to EDM, it’s just about what feels like good music to us. Electronic music was always there like all other genres, we try to show some elements from other genres in our productions, if you listen closely you might understand where we get some of our ideas from… To sum it up: A lot of different variables probably led to this, but one of the main ones was the full control of all sounds in electronic music. You know you decide all sounds, and it’s up to you to make it work.

DA: Are you classically trained in any instruments?

Not exactly, there was some piano and guitar lessons in the past, the rest is self taught, but we believe we know our scales and chords :)

DA: Who are some of your biggest musical influences in EDM? Outside of EDM?

That’s a big one, we really don’t have anyone in modern EDM that really stands out as a clear favorite or influence, but outside of EDM: Vangelis(The real Vangelis), Diana Krall, Zapp and Slum Village to name a few.

DA: What is an ultimate goal or something you’d consider a milestone that you’ve yet to achieve or accomplish?

Well that’s a tough one aswell, we constantly put up goals which we try to achieve, we think it’s pretty important regardless of what you do in life. You need to set up some goals and to try to reach them. When you reach your goals you set up new ones and so on, always try to do better.

DA: What is your DJ equipment of choice and why?

CDJs 2000’s x 3 or 4, a DJM900, usb or sd cards, thats about it…

DA: What is your DAW of choice?

Cubase

DA: What signature sounds or drums from some of your favorite artists do you find really compelling?

We really like Brian Eno’s sense of space within a mix, It’s sort of eerie and just beautiful, as far as drums go, we like our own :)

DA: Who do you think is really pushing the envelope of EDM? Who do you think is at the top of their game right now?

Wolfgang Gartner has surely got his sound down. His music is fun to listen to because the second play of a song you will hear something you didn’t notice at first play. Also most things Rob Swire put his hands on sounds terrific as well…

A top of their game right now, you would probably find guys like Deadmau5, SHM, Skrillex, Avicii etc…

DA: Who would you like to work with and why?

Al Pacino would be cool! Nah but seriously, no one in particular, sometimes collabs work and sometimes they don’t. If it feels good and there is time, let’s do it!

DA: Do you have any plans for a tour in the near future? Any big gigs lined up?

We can’t say much right now, but things are definitely opening up, it feels exciting!

DA: Who do you see as an up and coming talent that has yet to really break through?

There are a couple of insanely talented young swedes we like a lot, 9Five is 16 year old duo that you should look out for, as well as fellow Swedes Filip Jenvén and Ludvig Holm.

DA: SHAMELESS PLUG TIME! Let us know about anything you have in the pipeline, anything you want to promote?

Yeah our Facebook Page, our Soundcloud, there you will find all the latest of upcoming previews, and news in general!
