Armin van Buuren rocks Pier 36 crowd on NYE
For trance fans, the choice for New Year’s Eve in New York was clear. Newly re-crowned number one DJ in the world Armin van Buuren was joined by Jerome Isma-ae and Jochen Miller at Pier 36 for a high-energy, nonstop party to ring in 2013. We arrived just in time to catch the last 20 minutes of Jerome’s set, but the change in mood as Armin took over the decks right around 11pm was palpable. He eased the crowd into his four hour set with familiar tracks like his collaboration “I’ll Listen” with Ana Criado, the Omnia Remix of Cosmic Gate‘s “Calm Down,” and catchy tracks from pals like Dash Berlin and Andrew Rayel.
As the clock approached midnight, Armin took a bit of a turn into the land of big room house — dabbling in mash-ups of Deniz Koyu’s “Bong” with Ummet Ozcan’s driving “The Box.” One minute before midnight, we started to hear a loud ticking clock and a deep voice (similar to the intro voice on ASOT) hyping the crowd. After we passed through the 10-9-8, Armin dropped one of his biggest tracks of the year “We Are Here to Make Some Noise” for a huge crowd reaction. 2013 was here. He followed with one of our favorite mash-ups from the show combining two huge rave tracks (Sandro Silva & Quintino – Epic w/ Showtek & Prime – Cannonball) for the first great peak of the night.
Armin spent the rest of his first set of 2013 oscillating between more recognizable material and higher BPM trance tunes — pleasing both casual fans and die-hard trance heads. His edit of his “Brute” collaboration with Ferry Corsten into an acapella of “Concrete Angel” was a highlight along with endless choice tunes from Solarstone, Markus Schulz, Beat Service, W&W, Orjan Nilsen, Sneijder, and Andain. Armin was rocking the crowd, but he was also having a blast himself. Jumping around, smiling, and waving; the Dutchman was more animated than many other times we’ve seen him.
