Weekend Rewind: Deee-lite’s 1990 crossover hit ‘Groove Is In The Heart’

Let’s flash back to 1990, when mainstream listeners became so infatuated with an underground dance music track that it eventually hit number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Deee-Lite, an eccentric New York dance group composed of two DJs and a vocalist, wanted to pay tribute to their hometown’s nightlife scene with “Groove Is In The Heart.” With help from Funk pioneer Bootsy Collins, it playfully infused a 60s trippy vibe, 70s style disco grooves, and a 90s style house beat; which unfortunately turned into a one-hit-wonder for the group. The song still carries influence as it continues to make appearances today in television shows such as Charlie’s Angels, How I Met Your Mother and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Maybe one day we’ll overhear “DYWC” infused into one of our teen’s tacky sitcoms? We can only dream.
