Essential Mix Review: Jaymo & Andy George take on Radio 1 decks with pile of Moda Black exclusives

2013 has been off to an unbelievable start over at the Radio 1 studios, and this past week’s Essential Mix from Radio 1 regulars and Moda Black heads Jaymo & Andy George was just one more notch on the radio station’s decorated bed post. This taste-making duet met only in 2008, but since then have built a well-respected party brand, record label, recorded now three Essential Mixes (two live), served as early supporters for names like Hot Since 82 and Disclosure, and landed residencies in Ibiza and Fabric London. When they have a moment to breathe, they also do a solid job on their own in the studio and compile award-winning compilations (their first volume of Moda Black reached #1 on the iTunes Dance charts last year).

In their own words, this Essential Mix was an opportunity for them to write their own tale, to dig deep into tunes old and new, and paint a full picture of their collaboration over the last five years. Much of the mix focuses on highly relatable topics — following dreams, living out dreams, daydreaming, love, and life. They all act as important interludes peppered amongst their mixing and much like Above & Beyond’s 2011 mix or Lee Foss’s mix from last year, Jaymo & Andy George interject personality through spoken word and pop culture references. It’s something that’s pretty unique to the world’s favorite mix show, and it works every time.

The mix opens with Le Knight Club’s sunny track “Holiday On Ice” — which if you are a Daft Punk diehard, you’ll know is a project Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo worked on with Éric Chedeville. They, however, bounce right back into 2013 with Bicep’s recently crowned Essential New Tune “Stash” and pump through Daniel Diamond’s 2002 smasher “Champu,” a DJ Sneak remix of a Phil Weeks track from 2011, Ibadan label head Jerome Sydenham’s “Brooklyn Rock,” and others.

Jaymo & Andy George hit their stride around the 45 minute mark when they start cranking out Moda material with their own new track “Remember.” In a clever move, they quickly dive back into French house with Daft Punk’s remix of Gabrielle’s “Forget About The World,” and Huxley’s forthcoming single on Rinse, “Lost Love.” The mix fishtails between broken beat rhythms, classic house vocal samples, and funky 8 bar bass lines. It feels old, it feels new, and it definitely shows an appropriate level of consideration and scrutiny in track selection. Much like fellow Radio 1 regular Pete Tong, Jaymo & Andy George may not necessarily be remembered solely for their studio efforts, but they still manage to serve as topnotch DJs, A&R genies, and dance music tastemakers.
