Battle of the Beats: Diplo vs Labrinth – Express Yourself

Battle of the Beats is a feature from Dancing Astronaut that pits two tracks that share the same title against one another to determine which production represents the name better. With the dance music community continually growing, producers, mashup artists and DJs alike constantly create new music, often of the same name.  Now we are opening it up to our readers to weigh in on whose rendition takes the proverbial cake.

Diplo – Express Yourself

The track that launched a tour, a twerk movement, and a mass expulsion, Diplo’s “Express Yourself” uses Nicky Da B’s vocal and a drunken dance hall beat to get even the nicest high school girl to “make it clap.” With Diplo’s brand of grinding and grind-enducing reggaeton, the track shook its way into the heads of hordes of Mad Decent fans and their eavesdropping younger cousins.

Labrinth – Express Yourself

Britain’s Labrinth invites listeners to express themselves in a slightly more PG way. Sampling the vocal of Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’s own “Express Yourself” (which N.W.A consequently used in their own “Express Yourself”), the producer created an optimistic rework with a synthy big band feel. Complete with a dreamscape intro and kick drum punctuation, the tune is mom-approved fun for the whole family.
