Weekend Rewind: The Chemical Brothers – The Private Psychedelic Reel

When The Chemical Brothers released Dig Your Own Hole in 1997 many listeners gravitated to the album due to the massive appeal of its lead single “Block Rockin’ Beats” but, as most soon realized, Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands had much, much more up their proverbial sleeves. Enter “The Private Psychedelic Reel” a cut that has been dubbed by many as the best electronic track of all time. Clocking in at just under 10-minutes, the duo’s magnum opus is a transcendental journey through psychedelia, a deeply layered and intricately woven tapestry of middle eastern influences, breathtaking drum rolls and larger than life big beat breaks. For any true fan of electronic music, listening to “The Private Psychedelic Reel” should be a rite of passage – there is very little in today’s EDM that evokes the same power that this track does. As one YouTube commenter so eloquently put it — “When I first heard this the lights turned on.”
