On the way to Croatia; Ultra Europe 2013 Picks Day One

This Friday, for the first time in Ultra Music Festival’s history, the iconic brand will be touching down on European soil. The first official destination festival in its repertoire, Ultra Europe’s first two days will take place at Poljud stadium in the city of Split. For its third and final day, the festival migrates to the Amfora resort on the island of Hvar for a festival-sized pool party that will dwarf anything Vegas has to offer. Heading out there to experience the inaugural event first hand, these are our tops picks for day one of Ultra Europe.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano

Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano have been one of the most highly demanded live acts in dance music this year. Unanimous favorite sets across festivals and clubs worldwide, Sunnery and Ryan offer a quicksand of a sound, translatable across American and European markets. Recently bringing their beats across the greatest events that the states have to offer, the two-some have their sights set on Ultra’s European affair in Croatia. With little need for transition, their set will encompass their arsenal of sexy house and jungle drums with spontaneous mash-ups, perfected bootleg, and festive crowd pleasers.

Avicii At Slagthuset

Avicii

Avicii’s performance at Ultra Music Festival, Miami could possible be hailed as the set heard around the globe in regards to the greatest buzz and commotion of the year thus far. Debuting his forthcoming album, TRUE, in its near entirety alongside its collaborators, Tim’s main stage showcase resonated with fans to mixed emotions. Later offering further insight with mastered sound in the form of a promo mix, and finally releasing. the album’s lead single, fans are warming up to Avicii’s evolving sound as he continues to perfect it’s delivery. This weekend in Split, Croatia, Avicii will have his second crack blowing minds at Ultra, looking to outdo his Miami outing at its European counterpart.

Andrew’s picks:

Luciano

Luciano

I couldn’t think of a more ideal place to see one of dance music’s finest than in a city in the Mediterranean basin. While crisp Balearic vibes and sex-fueled tech house may only be just starting to take hold in the US, the Cadenza faithful and Vagabundos party leader is an institution in Europe. Headlining sets in America are often reserved for the commercial house juggernauts, but in Europe it’s the exact opposite – Luciano will be the undeniable focal point for the first day. Set times have yet to be announced but the house technician is known for his early morning sets and, with the festival running from 5pm to 5am, there is a good chance his performance will fall right on the edge of daybreak.

Art Department

Art Department

Everyone remembers their first, and in 2012 Art Department became my first formal introduction to the deeper side of dance music. As a passionate bass head who shunned everything without a wobble, I was dragged along to see Jonny and Kenny… four hours later I was an Art Department faithful. Casual deep house vibes and gripping bass lines define Art Department’s music first aesthetic. By embracing and delivering feel good but freakishly unconventional sets, the duo have established themselves as master craftsman of deep and intelligent dance music.
