On the way to Croatia; Ultra Europe 2013 Picks Day Two
This Friday, for the first time in Ultra Music Festival’s history, the iconic brand will be touching down on European soil. The first official destination festival in its repertoire, Ultra Europe’s first two days will take place at Poljud stadium in the city of Split. For its third and final day, the festival migrates to the Amfora resort on the island of Hvar for a festival-sized pool party that will dwarf anything Vegas has to offer. Heading out there to experience the inaugural event first hand, these are our tops picks for day two of Ultra Europe.
The number six DJ in the world. It’s a label that has resonated with fans since 2012’s DJ Mag rankings were released. In America, Hardwell paid testament to his slot at Ultra Music Festival with his unanimous festival-favorite set that had the Miami crowd, along with the world tuning into UMF TV, in utter awe. This weekend, Hardwell will revisit Ultra, this time in Europe, ready to take his victory lap and provide an encore to one of the most unforgettable moments of his career. Can’t make the trip to the destination festival for the year, Hardwell will once again live stream an Ultra set via UMF TV — one that you won’t want to miss.

Krewella’s wildly successful run and rapidly escalating popularity is no secret in the United States. And after venturing north to Canada, it became clear that their allure is spreading beyond borders. This weekend, the trio of Jahan, Yasmine, and Rain Man will claim the stage of Ultra Europe, and it will be interesting to see if their celebrity status has made its way across the pond. If European fans are on the same page of those in America, attendees will go ape-shit for the ever so animated antics and four-on-the-floor beats. Always one to enjoy the live shows from Krewella, I’m equally looking forward to the crowds reaction during their Croatia outing.

The founder of Music On and one of Europe’s biggest draws, Marco Carola will be headlining day 2 of Ultra Europe. A veritable god to anyone with a taste for techno, Carola’s three deck mixing and energetic set curation will undoubtedly be one of the more unique experiences of the three day affair. While legends like Hawtin develop sparse and minimal soundscapes, Carola infuses his techno espionage with spritely bounces and gripping grooves. Like Luciano the day before, Carola is the cultural headliner of the festival’s second day and one of the defining sets of Ultra’s European debut.

I have never seen Chase and Status before and, admittedly, my drum and bass knowledge is highly suspect — but that is precisely the reason why I plan on catching this British duo’s set during Ultra Europe. Although their US presence isn’t as big as some of the other headliners, they’ve been making serious waves overseas for quite some time. I started writing about music because I loved the excitement of discovering it and Chase and Status’s set on day 2 is the perfect opportunity to catch the duo in their natural element. Chase and Status’s drum driven energy will serve as the perfect juxtaposition to Ultra Europe’s gripping techno and big room progressive performances.
