Maceo Plex’s reshaping of Coldcut’s remix of Steve Reich’s 1974-1976 masterpiece “Music for 18 Musicians” first appeared on his February 2012 Essential Mix, but the producer and prolific remixer is now giving away the previously unreleased record as a free download. Reich’s original “Music for 18 Musicians” was designed quite literally to be played by 18 individual musicians and revolves around the structure of a series of revolving chords. With both Maceo and Coldcut’s versions at play here, a good deal of the intended minimalism may be lost, but in turn the song has gained a modern day groove that Steve Reich may have never thought to add.
