Editors’ Selections: Week of September 16th, 2013

Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite Dancing Astronaut contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.

Matt:

James Blake – Retrograde (Miko Remix)

Out of a veritable sea of Retrograde remixes, Miko’s thoughtful and ponderous downtempo trap rework of James Blake’s signature tune may very well take the cake. Combining an innovative pitch-shifting approach on select vocal snippets with dreamy atmospherics and a cataclysmic climax, Miko has succeeded in providing a total reinterpretation of the song that he has made his own.

Cara:

Pional – Just Passing Through (Original Mix)

It’s not exactly new, but “Just Passing Through” is a perfect example of why I love how complicated electronic music can be. Listen closely and you’ll hear a head-spinning number of elements being built into this track.

Allegra:

Matt Lange – Only You

Since one of my favorite Anjunabeats artists recently remixed one of my favorite The M Machine songs, I though I’d remind you all that he exists. And, you know, share some of his new material. Matt Lange may be best known for “Rift,” but to only know him for that is a crime against music.  His latest release “Only You” carries the New Yorker’s signature stylistic markings: It is as technical as it is emotional, as melancholy as moving, and basically the perfect soundtrack for either falling in love or going through an existential crisis. Which upon further reflection may actually be the same thing.

Jake:

Practical & Veto – Stories

Once again, summer has come and gone. For me, this track brings back many beautiful memories from summers past, eternal sunsets and bittersweet goodbyes. The melancholy vocals, accompanied by soulful piano and a thoughtful drum and bass pattern, strike a chord with my heartstrings. It’s enormously cheesy, I know, but this track…it’s the epitome of that quote from Dr. Seuss, “don’t cry because it’s over…smile because it happened.” Give a listen, you won’t regret it.

Andrew:

Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano – Lethal Industry (Kastra Remix)

I decided to climb out of the deep house hole I’ve been in for the last 6 months for music with some energy and stumbled upon Kastra’s remix of Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano’s reimagination of Tiësto’s “Lethal Industry.” A remix of a remake of a classic, Kastra dabbles in this new-fangled Melbourne bounce genre — and while I’m not sold on adding another descriptor in the already convoluted sea of over classified electro house, Kastra’s bouncy remix did well to remind me what I was missing during my deep house sabbatical –  fun.
