Danny Howells delivers 'THIS' and 'THAT' for 2-CD Balance mix
An often overlooked repercussion of dance music’s recent explosion is the overshadowing of the truly great DJs who spent decades building and developing the culture to where it is today. One of those artists was Danny Howells, a UK-born talent who secured a DJMag Top 10 spot back in 2001 and found himself ranked at #26 of the Top 100 most influential DJs of the last 20 years. Now it seems, the DJ/producer has unfairly faded into obscurity, a disservice to both his talent and his contributions to the scene we all call home.
For his contribution to the esteemed Balance collection, Howells showcases his reputation as a “DJ’s DJ,” taking a steadfast stance in lieu of the cultural shifts dance music has endured since the late 90s by delivering two silky mixes, dubbed “THIS” and “THAT”, that serve as a statement-making return from his long-standing hiatus. On “THIS,” Balaeric vibes develop into punchy piano rolls and syrupy nu-disco before Howells ups the energy with incessant snares and dark re-rubs. “THAT” mix throws back to the legendary sounds of Sasha and Digweed’s “Northern Exposure,” focusing instead on a misty dustup of broken beat signatures and cryptic synthwork. The more brooding half of the collection, “THAT” is designed for rainy evenings and crackling fires, adding a hypnotic charm to the perfectly balanced double disk set… pun intended.
