2009’s Hot Rap Song just got a little steamier. San Francisco trio K Theory have added a second Drake tune to a remix catalog that includes everyone from Gareth Emery to Lana Del Rey to Jay Z, and the results are as bold as you’d expect from a group willing to boast that combination. One part Colorado dubstep, two parts trap and three doses of creativity combine to update the tune from clever lines to a complete package. By bolstering the bass, weaving their own verse into the rhymes and adding drama with hi-hats and reverb, the trio’s contrast with the original serves as a reminder that a full five years have passed since the world first fell for Drake’s smooth talking. As close to a love song as the genre is willing to go in 2014, the latest rework of “Best I Ever Had” may be the best it ever had.
