Mind Against – Avalon EP
Allesandro and Federico Fognini’s latest outing on the acclaimed label showcases their patient production ear for morose melodies and ghastly atmospherics. The haphazard synth stabs of “Several Times” dance above a backbone pluck punctuated by droning Moog bass. Meanwhile, the complexities of the title track’s intertwined synthesizers take a few listens to fully grasp, but only a couple seconds to fall for once the foreboding bass takes the fore.
Alluring and enigmatic, Avalon marks yet another standout release from a label in full stride. Considering its creative cross-pollination with Dixon’s Innervisions, you’d be hard-pressed to find a hotter underground imprint than Life and Death at the moment.
