Junior Sanchez & Alexander Technique – Baila (Original Mix)
Dance music is more often rooted back to European origins from London to small towns in Sweden, or American influences from Chicago to New York. Less often acknowledged is some if its earliest ties internationally. Take Sri Lanka for example, where the popular form of dance music is known as Baila.
This week, “Baila” comes as the latest record from the Brobot camp at the hands of Junior Sanchez and Alexander Technique. Although it may not be the sound from the center of primitive Sri Lankan celebrations, its similarity comes at the cross between influences. Like the style which name it holds, “Baila” embodies instrumentation of European elements for a taste of Caribbean twang — only Junior and Technique reformat in vain of their traditional, New York-bred house.
