KOAN Sound – Dynasty EP
While KOAN Sound have always been one of the more innovative talents in the scene, the sheer quality of their newest work has forced us to completely reconsider their talent. Though the cinematic, funk-laden style of Sanctuary and now Dynasty is nothing new for the Bristol duo, the two EPs boast a distinct creative flair that is nothing short of brilliant. While the former EP was a five-track orchestral masterpiece, KOAN Sound’s newest effort, Dynasty, brings four new glistening originals to the table.
The four-track offering is an all-out showcase of the duo’s next level approach to sound design. From the churning reese basses of “Dynasty” and “7th Dimension,” to the immaculate percussion of “Lost in Thought” and “Infinite Funk,” KOAN Sound’s careful technique boasts a maturity beyond their young age.
As per their reputation, the resampling on the EP is some of their most creative to date, with sounds spitting, turning, and flipping with a dexterous ease. The symphonic vibe from Sanctuary is present once again, yet with a conspicuous emphasis on funk. Slapping basslines and syncopation exemplify this approach, which once again incorporates live instrumentation to create a cohesive and vastly compelling whole.
