Oliver Heldens returns with a smile and another upfront house bomb
From anonymous Renaissance man to young Spinnin protégé, the past six months have served Oliver Heldens a whirlwind accession of the global dance spectrum. Having matched his ability to drop forthright house sets with an impeccable balance between the big room and the genre’s deeper remits, the young Dutch talent returns with a smile and a brand new original for the road to summer. In a far murkier and mechanical manner than that of his Musical Freedom breakthrough “Gecko,” the as-yet titled “:]” is another infectious indicator of the dilapidation of festival house and the bucking trend of tenacious house tunes. How much longer this will be the case is anybody’s guess, but Helden’s presence remains as promising on paper as it does blissful in execution.
