10 Reasons You Have to Attend Movement Festival

Memorial Day Weekend marks the start of the insane summer festival season when dance music pandemonium sweeps the nation week after week. As Movement Electronic Music Festival enters its fifteenth year, we take a look at the historic Paxahau event, and what makes this event such a dance music gem. Without ado, these are the 10 reasons you must attend Detroit’s own dance music event.

Hart Plaza

Tucked in the heart of downtown Detroit, Hart Plaza is a historic site in a truly American city. With a expansive venue that can fit around 40,000 attendees, it overlooks the adjacent Detroit River, a gorgeous location for a music festival. There are few better venues in the city to see a show as the city’s skyline frames many of the stages and viewing points of event.

The Sunday Music Red Bull Academy Stage

We were caught staring at the lineup of this stage when it was first released. The latter half of the lineup was absolutely stunning. With Seth Troxler, Marco Carola, John Digweed, and Richie Hawtin all lined up for six and a half hours, this setlist is worth the price of admission alone. With Maceo Plex, Dixon, Martin Buttrich, and others playing at the same times as well, this is a real headache to plan.

But that’s a good thing.

The After Parties

Yes, there is a music festival. But the after parties are absolutely loaded as well, starting Friday and wrapping up in the wee hours of Tuesday. With events hosted by Marco Carola, Seth Troxler, Art Department, and more, you get the house and techno bliss you need even after the festival is over. On this weekend, music never stops, almost quite literally.

It’s About the Music

Over here, you will not find much “EDM.” These artists have been carefully curated to cater to the deep house and techno scene. Dedicating the weekend to grooves and beautiful beats, few can match the eclectic and eye-popping lineup this festival possesses. Don’t expect to hear “Animals” or any radio tracks here. Or many tracks you can recognize at all, for that matter.

Kevin Saunderson b2b Seth Troxler

You get multiple chances to catch Seth Troxler this weekend. From his own set to his appearance at the festival’s after party, nothing may be as special as this 45 minute set tucked into the night of the final day of the festival. A true treat for fans to catch briefly, his appearance with good friend Kevin Saunderson is not highlighted on the setlist, but not overlooked in our eyes.

This one is going to be a real treat.

Longer and Better Sets

With many of the top acts playing at least 90 minute sets, Movement Festival gives artists a chance to truly express themselves. With more festivals packing in artists at the expense of reasonable set times, Paxahau refuses to fit the mold. Over a six hour span, you will get to see Lee Foss, Pete Tong, Tiga, and Boys Noize showcase their craft. That is truly priceless.

$130 Tickets

Not for single days.

For the entire length of the festival. With the entire collection of the world’s best deep house, tech house, techno, and garage house DJ’s all in one location for three days, this is almost unheard of. If you don’t believe us, head here to see the price for yourself.

The Monday MOOG Stage

A little different from most the other stages, this stage is likely the most eclectic of them all. Housing music from indie dance to trap music, this is a welcome break from the rest of the festival. The vastly underrated Bonobo plays in the afternoon, sandwiched by sets like the French Express Moon Boots and the fast rising DJ Snake, giving the festival a nice appendix of sets to explore.

The Crowd

This is not your neon furry boots festival. With house music fans descending on Michigan from all corners of the world, this should make for a far more diverse group than many of the other events nationwide that weekend. With re-entry policies and allowances of children, this event may lack the frenetic insanity of festivals, but that may be a good thing.

3 Hour Chris Liebing Set

The German legend gets his own special time slot on Friday, where he is featured for three hours on the Underground Stage. One of the only artists at the festivals to receive this privilege, fans should get a chance to get a glimpse of him despite other heavyweights like Stacey Pullen, Tale of Us, and Claude Von Stroke playing at the same time.
