Martin Garrix kicks off Residency, Steve Angello’s continues with Third Party guest mix
Thursday nights have become a highlight for BBC Radio 1 since debuting their Residency mix series in January. Thus far, the most prolific outings have come from the monthly duties of Steve Angello — and those special evenings are now being supported by another guest spot. Last night, quick-rising superstar Martin Garrix made his Residency debut — one achievement that stands out even among his long list of recent accolades.
Martin’s mix stunned in surprising fashion, sporting a different take than that of his recent Ultra and Coachella sets. Fitting for its global audience, Garrix kicked things off in a traditional house taste with selections like Fox Stevenson’s “Tico,” Youan’s “Lose Control,” and Disclosure and Friend Within’s “The Mechanism.” His anticipated collaboration with Sander van Doorn and DVBBS soon followed to lead his mix into a gradual build that would peak with his signature antics. After the currently surging “Tremor,” Martin teased his Ultra-debuted “Five Days,” going right into “Proxy” before name dropping future collaborations with Afrojack and Tiësto.
The night went on and the pace had changed with Steve Angello continuing his Residency run. With “Payback” released and eyes towards the future of Size, the mix began appropriately with an upcoming record from Arno Cost and Norman Doray, “Strong.” The “upfront” dance music, as Steve calls it, continued with more mellow house with Ten Walls’ “Walking With Elephants” being one of the more fan-familiar selections in a group of lesser-known but well-suited tunes.
As the first act of Steve’s mix was his usual beloved house temperament, Third Party soon took the reigns and elevated the journey with their guest mix. Their “Otherside” remix proved timeless, per usual, and their newest original production “Every Day Of My Life” garnered even greater due acclaim.
With Steve back in control, the mix’s closing act was unbound by a celebratory selection encompassing all sounds. Listeners got a taste of Junior Sanchez’s upcoming Sultan + Ned collaboration, “Deeper Love,” as well as a world premiere of the newest work from the Qulinez boys.
