Even past the wrath of early house crossover hit “Lola’s Theme,” The Shapeshifters have remained a force to be reckoned with on the UK circuit. Now, as the inaugural cog in fresh imprint initiative Love Inc, the long serving duo unleashes “Heartache” to set the label in positive motion for the summer ahead.
For a duo who have struck a rare balance between the nostalgic and the new age hallmarks of the genre, their Love Inc debut is enough to assert that Simon Marlin and Max Reich have not been left behind where the forward movements of the genre are concerned. The soulful and harrowing undertones of Calvin Lynch’s vocal work give “Heartache” an edge vaguely reminiscent of a time when deep house stood for more than just pitched down vocals and low end wobbles. The game is still no-nonsense house music when The Shapeshifters come to town and if this label debut is anything to go by, it’s still a serious playing field where this fortified British outfit is concerned.
