Categorizing Zeds Dead by genre is simply impossible. The Toronto-bred production outfit is about as unpredictable as they come, overlooking boundaries and producing a wide spectrum of sounds all marked by the pair’s creative versatility. Although known by their affinity for bulldozing, bass-powered robotic synths and impeccable sample work, DC and Hooks have cruised through acid house, drum n’ bass, chillwave, and trap productions on past releases spanning various powerhouse record labels. Their latest release continues to keep us on our toes, this time with a groovy and melodic deep house concoction.
The duo’s latest material comes off of their recently announced Somewhere Else EP, a collaborative effort called “Lost You.” Enlisting the help of Los Angeles-based music producer/filmmaker Twin Shadow and budding lyricist D’Angelo Lacy, Zeds Dead meanders out of their comfort zone, swapping buzzing waves of wobble for silky rhythms. Lacy’s ultra-catchy pop hook rides perfectly over Zeds Dead’s methodically arranged, garage house beat showcasing the pair’s intriguing departure from bass productions.
