Weekend Rewind: Basshunter’s English-remade hit ‘All I Ever Wanted’

Back before the alleged “EDM bubble” era in the United States began to inflate, dance music had evolving styles making waves across Europe. Eurodance experienced a miniature revival after ringing in the millennium, where Basshunter’s contagious hooks and euphoric melodies took regions of Europe by storm. One of the Swede’s classic anthems, “All I Ever Wanted” was the second single off his Now Your Gone – The Album, a collection of English adaptations and reworks of his previous album. “All I Ever Wanted” plays off the melody Basshunter’s 2006 hit “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA”, a Swedish-sung tune about using the voice chat program “Ventrilo” while playing Warcraft (both sampled from French dance act Daddy DJ’s self-titled “Daddy DJ”). The original Swedish lyrics have no connection to the English version about fun, young love with a music video to match. And though maybe cheesy and outdated, the video’s signature intense club scenes evoke great feelings of nostalgia, reminding us of simpler times where dance music wasn’t about the spectacle, but about enjoying and losing yourself to the music.
