If you turned up for Phoenix’s 2013 Coachella set in search of some robots, what you got instead was a healthy serving of the band’s fifth studio album Bankrupt! – and some R. Kelly. While the bots still haven’t publicly re-associated with Phoenix, another Frenchman has. Gesaffelstein is the final artist in the Bankrupt remix series, following efforts from the likes of A-Trak, Sleigh Bells and the aforementioned R. Kelly with his own take on the title track. Where the original spends its first four and a half minutes as a sprawling instrumental before introducing a lyric, the Parisian’s version pulls Thomas Mars’ vocal to the intro, where it fades out into a new melody that alternates between villainous and fantastical. The very Bromance “Bankrupt!” edit is the second tune in as many months to be released as a free download – let’s hope this keeps going.
