Carl Cox and Nile Rodgers collaborated on a techno track

Carl Cox has been DJing longer than most of us have been alive, so naturally, the British veteran has acquired a bit of wisdom over the years. In a recent interview with Mixmag, Carl shared one of his finest insights yet:

“EDM’s an entry level to dance music, and I’m very happy about that. We fought so long for dance music to be respected there. EDM’s a sound America has latched on to, but once people start going left and right of that scene, they’re going to find their Art Departments, their Loco Dices and their Sven Väths – and that’s a really good place to be.”

When every other big artist seems to be resorting to bitter pessimism these days, Carl’s outlook is anything but. Rather than dismiss the mainstream success of dance music and the popularization of “EDM” as detrimental, Cox embraces the phenomenon for the new wave of fans it has ushered in. While new entrants into the scene are initially drawn in by way of more commercial genres, their tastes nearly always evolve to find more obscure and interesting sub-communities. As Carl points out, this invariably leads to people finding their “Art Departments, their Loco Dices and their Sven Väths,” whom we know to be some of the finest talents around, regardless of genre.

Aside from spitting wisdom every chance he gets, Carl has plenty of cool projects up his sleeve. He’s currently part of a residency at Cirque du Soleil’s Light where he’s confounding expectations of Vegas at every turn: “I’m bringing more of a club vibe. It’s almost an anti-entertainment vibe. You won’t be hearing any records you know.”

He’s also collaborating with disco legend Nile Rodgers in a bit of an unconventional fashion: “We worked on a techno track when he brought Chic to Australia earlier this year. That’s my ambition: to get Nile Rodgers playing techno events!”

From his outspoken commentary to his unorthodox methods, Carl Cox continues to be one of our favorite figures in dance music.
