Spring Awakening enforces 18+ age restriction for 2015
In 2011, following the death of 15-year old Sasha Rodriguez, Electric Daisy Carnival implemented an 18+ age restriction in order to be granted entry. Electric Zoo followed suit in 2013, and a year later, Ultra Music Festival announced its plans to do the same for its upcoming festival in 2015. Now, Spring Awakening, which was previously an all-ages event, has made the leap as well, leaving very few events left for our youth to attend.
In an email sent to subscribers, Spring Awakening wrote, “SAMF truly appreciates the support from our younger fans, but we believe the festival is an experience for adults,” the email asserted. “This difficult decision was made to promote safety amongst our fans and ensure the best experience from our attendees and future attendees. We encourage everyone to attend the festival when they reach the appropriate age.”
As Chicago’s first major music festival to invoke an 18+ age restriction, both fans and the media alike are holding their breath, wondering when other all-ages festivals in the city, such as Lollapalooza, will make the move.
