Watch This: Skrillex covers Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’
Let’s go back to 2008. Dance music hasn’t quite yet conquered the States, and future superstar Sonny Moore hasn’t even come up with the Skrillex moniker yet. In fact, in 2008, Sonny Moore had recently left his band From First To Last, undergone a successful vocal surgery, and had just begun to revamp his career on his own out on Alternative Press Magazine’s second annual tour. Shortly before Skrillex emerges on the scene, we find Sonny Moore closing out the AP Tour in Cleveland, Ohio with a full band and a microphone. And sometimes in the heat of the moment, after you and your band have just rocked the house to its core, you have to tone things down. Sometimes you cover Rihanna. It doesn’t matter how big of a star you are.
Check out Sonny Moore, long before he was the spaceship helming, main stage headlining, boundary pushing superstar we know him as today. Leaving it all on stage with a punk rock rendition of Rihanna and Jay Z’s smash hit “Umbrella” back in 2008, we can see here that things have certainly come a very long way for the man we now know as Skrillex.
