Jay Z’s streaming service set to relaunch with support from Calvin Harris, Madonna, Kanye West, and more
Two months after we first got word that Jay Z was making a $56 million investment in Aspiro, it looks like it’s time to relaunch TIDAL, one of the company’s two streaming services. According to TIDAL’s website, it will be “the first music streaming service that combines the best High Fidelity sound quality, High Definition music videos and expertly Curated Editorial.”
One of TIDAL’s keys to success will be exclusivity. According to Breakit, artists like Kanye West, Daft Punk, and Madonna will offer their songs to TIDAL months before giving them to rival services. In fact, Taylor Swift, who famously pulled all of her music from Spotify last year, has already made all of her albums except for 1989 available on TIDAL.
Jay’s enormous industry influence likely played a role in securing exclusive release windows, but there’s far more to it than that. Artists and labels have publicly complained that payouts from services like Spotify are far too low. According to TechCrunch, TIDAL will offer substantially higher payouts to artists. These higher payments will be made possible in part by TIDAL’s unique take on the two-tiered system: TIDAL offers a high-fidelity service for $19.99 per month and a standard service for $9.99 per month, but there is no free, ad-supported option.
Musicians including Madonna, Kanye, Beyoncé, Calvin Harris, Rihanna, and Coldplay have begun showing support for the service by uploading turquoise profile pictures and using the hashtag #TIDALforALL.
